What do we mean by atheist?

A person who does not believe in deities.

A person who does not believe in a particular deity (or any deity in a particular pantheon), notwithstanding that they may believe in another deity.

An atheist is a person who does not believe in any sort of deity. Though this does not neccessarily precipitate smugness, it can often lead to it. Atheists however are impossible to stereotype just as any person of any other faith is impossible to stereotype due to the wide nature of this group. Urban Dictionary

1) A person who does not believe in any sort of deity or "God" but accepts that others do. 2) An elitist who like to mock anyone that disagrees with them, particularly christians. In case 2 what's disturbing is the utter contempt, disrespect, and intolerance (and in some cases, hatred) these people have for anyone that disagrees with them. They refuse to go by the principles of live-and-let-live and do-unto-others. They will counter this assertion by arguing that religious people never live-and-let-live and are always forcing religion onto people. This is of course false, and only applies to a very small minority of religious people (such as the nutjobs at the WBC) and thus is a prime example of smearing people with a vastly over-generalized statement. Many people often confuse atheism with agnosticism, by saying that atheists are confused and have no faith whatsoever. This is not true. Although there are many different kids of atheists, the many principle is that there is no God or higher being. They do not always rely on science to come to this conclusion. Therefore, atheists do believe and have faith; they believe that there is no God and they have faith that God does not exist. Agnostics do not believe in God but they do not believe that there is no God. Atheism is often a teenage phase, but it also lasts for life. Some Atheists judge Christians, Jews, etc., but some do not, and I think it is very judgemental to classify all Atheists as "self-obsessed judgemental people who hate anyone who's not an atheist".
