Although I haven't studied this system in any detail, it's very likely that natural avulsions of distributary channels in the delta were much more frequent pre-human influence and, as controls on the channels were installed to make agricultural development easier (e.g., human-made levees), the course of the channel became locked in place, effectively preventing avulsions. ❋ Unknown (2010)
