The new taxon can be easily distinguished from all congeners, except Otocinclus cocama, by having a single, intensely pigmented, vertical W-shaped caudal fin spot and by having three discrete dark bands on dorsum, between the dorsal-fin base and the caudal fin. ❋ Unknown (2007)

This species, known from the upper part of the Tocantins River drainage, is distinguished from congeners in having a shorter first branched dorsal-fin ray (22. 6-26.0% standard length) in fish larger than 70 mm standard length. ❋ Unknown (2010)

This species, known from the lower part of the Tocantins River drainage, is distinguished from congeners in having the anal-fin origin at the vertical through the tip of the last dorsal-fin ray. ❋ Unknown (2010)

It further differs from congeners in having a combination of: the front part of the snout without plates, long-cusped teeth, semi-oval shaped lower lip, length of first branched dorsal-fin ray 26. 4-31.0% standard length, lower jaw 20. 1-22.6% head length in fish larger than 50 mm standard length, head width 101. 3-106.1% head length, and eye diameter 16. 6-17.3% head length in fish larger than 100 mm standard length. ❋ Unknown (2010)

Friedhelm Krupp and Kevin Budd who described the species in the journal Aqua, said that the new fish differs from other Arabian Garra in having: "acutely pointed snout tip; anus immediately in front of anal-fin origin; 3 unbranched and 7 branched dorsal-fin rays; 34 or 35 pored scales in the lateral line, 14-16 circumpedunclar scale rows; 13-15 gill rakers on lower limb of first gill arch; mental disc small, usually longer than wide." ❋ Unknown (2009)

It further differs from congeners in having a combination of: an oval shaped area without plates on the front part of the snout, long-cusped teeth, semi-oval shaped lower lip, more than one plate between the base of the last pelvic-fin ray and the anterior margin of the anus, anal-fin origin at the vertical through the tip of the last dorsal-fin ray, abdominal length in fish larger than 150 mm standard length 17. 6-17.7% standard length, unbranched anal-fin ray 16. 9-20.3% standard length and eye diameter 13. 6-16.2% head length in fish larger than 70 mm standard length. ❋ Unknown (2010)

Moenkhausia chlorophthalma (pictured above) is known from the Xingu River drainage and is distinguished from congeners in having a combination of: large dark blotches on the anterior to central portions of the scales forming the seven dorsal-most longitudinal series, absence of a conspicuous midlateral dark stripe, a proximal, well-delimited black area on the adipose fin, seven longitudinal rows of large dark blotches, 25-28 lateral line scales, four scales between the lateral line and the dorsal-fin origin, seven branched pelvic-fin rays, and 7-12 scales covering the anal-fin base. ❋ Unknown (2010)

It differs from congeners in peninsular India and Sri Lanka in having a combination of: smooth last unbranched dorsal-fin ray, body depth 28. 6-35.5\% standard length, a single pair of barbels about as long as eye diameter, 20-23 lateral-line scales, ½3 / 1 / 2½ scales in transverse line from mid-dorsum to pelvic-fin origin, notched posterior profile of mid-body lateral-line scales and breeding males with sides of head and body rough, scattered extensively with breeding tubercles. ❋ Unknown (2009)
