Definitions and meanings of "Hamlets"
What do we mean by hamlets?
A small village or a group of houses.
A village that does not have its own church.
Any of the fish of the genus Hypoplectrus in the family Serranidae.
Used when an action got social credit, but there was nothing behind it, either because of deception or luck. Example 1: Jesse suggests to Billie that they should meet up tonight, even though Jesse secretly knows that Billie is busy and cannot meet. Jesse then *acts* (hence, 'Hamlet') very bummed, lamenting how on how much he misses Billie and that they should meet up already. Example 2: Todd does not want to hang with David as planned, but reluctantly calls him to check where they are meeting up. David apologises profusely and explains that something has come up and he cannot meet. Todd, being and/or pulling a Hamlet, acts very disappointed and explains that he was so looking forward to it. Smaller than a village - larger than a wide spot in the road, a hamlet usually has considerably less than 200 people and is usually tied to agriculture (although many housing subdivisions could loosely be described as hamlets, especially when incorpirated and containing a minimal number of people). A hamlet can either be dispersed (particularly in the USA), or clustered (see urban). It is often located at the crossing of two minor thouroughfares (at a crossroads). Most intentional communities, if not a village and and not tied into the fabric of a larger entity, could be described as hamlets. Urban Dictionary
