Definitions and meanings of "Latino"

What do we mean by latino?

(chiefly US) A person, especially and usually (interpreted as) a male, from Latin America, a Hispanic person. (Compare Latina.)

Any one who is, or whos ancestors are from a country with a latin based language. For example- Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, French, Galician, Italian, Occitan, Aromanian, Aragonese and Catalan. Urban Dictionary

Means "latin". The culture and language of ancient Italy. The Roman Empire took over most of Europe and influenced their languages and cultures, so it "latinized" the continent and the new languages are called Romance Languages (with roots in Rome). After Columbus's discovery of America (the Continent), and the subsequent colonizations of most of the new continent by Spain and Portugal, the latino influence was expanded. Latino is a person who speaks a romance language (i.e. Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese) or their cultural heritage comes from any country that speaks any of those languages. In the US the word latino is misused to name only people from Latin America. The Latin America was a term first created to mean "the part of America ruled by Latino countries, Spain and Portugal" in opposition to the Anglo-Saxon America, ruled by the British (now Eastern United States). In this sense, some parts of the United States are part of the Latin America because they were ruled by Spain at some point (California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas). Urban Dictionary

An ethnicity of people who have origins in one or more of the following countries in which Latin languages are the national language or are significantly used: Latin AMERICA: Argentina,Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Haiti, Paraguay, Peru, Paraguay, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Quebec, Saint-Pierre & Miquelon. Latin EUROPE: Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Italy, Romania, Moldavia, France, Monaco, San Marino, Belgium, Vatican City, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Latin AFRICA: Benin,Ghana, Angola, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Mozambique, Chad, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Cape Verde, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Togo, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo,Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Burundi, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome and Principe, Equatorial Guinea. Latin ASIA: Timor Leste, Macau, Philippines So a Latino can be of any race Urban Dictionary

A confusing term created by confused people who think you can classify a race by a language. Residents of "latin" American countries refer to themselves as latino because of their descendants from Spain. Little do they realize that most of said countries had next to zero interbreeding with Spaniards and a vast majority of those who refer to themselves as latin have zero Spanish blood. Countries and people who should obviously not be called latino are somehow lumped under this category simply because they speak Spanish. Blacks born in the Dominican Republic are somehow latino, as are white europeans from Spain. Blacks and Spaniards racially and ethnically have NOTHING in common with residents of the Latin Americas but call themselves the same race. Somehow, under this theory, a Spaniard is latin, but an Italian is not, despite the fact that pretty much everything Latin really came from Rome. Latino is an overly vague, catch-all term and a misnomer that attributes a culture to people that don't belong to it, at the same time depriving one of their actual heritage. A Mexican is a Mexican. A Spaniard is a Spaniard. A Puerto Rican is a Puerto Rican. Urban Dictionary

1) Well, it depends on who you talk to. Ignorant people just say people from Latin America are latino. But if you talk to people from Europe and Latin America, you learn that it's people of LATIN decent. AKA t3h Romanz, lolololol. Yes, people of LATIN decent. For example, in Europe, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and believe it or not, Romania. Of course you have like parts of Switzerland and like Southern Germany. And basically Latin America, since they were all raped by Spaniards and/or Portuguese settlers, so they're Latinos too. Not to be confused with HISPANIC, which is of just Spanish/Portuguese decent. Because we know they're the same because they're in the same peninsula. Either way, people have different definitions of what a "Latino" person is. In short, it's a person of Latin decent. ANother debate is whether if Quebec becomes its own country if it would be included as part of Latin America. Seeing how it's of Latin decent, and it's in North America, I personally don't see why not. And don't say that it's entirely different from other Latin American countries, because all Latin American countries are different. Compare Argentina to Brazil. Completely different cultures. 2) Someone very passionate during sex. AKA Italians and French men. Urban Dictionary

New world latin america pan idenity or Latino for short, is an individual whose culture or blood is derived from the romance world, in other words of south european/iberian orgin. all latino counries share similar past, culture, iberian heritage, history, Independence, & influences..which are found to make these new world nations to be like brothers latinos are a complex set of peoples of diverse origins, whose main origins are Europeans, Amerindians, Africans, and others in that order. However, the largest majorities are not "pure" peoples but mixed, in which the mestizo (Euro-native american mix) is the numerous majority in the Hispanic American world, while criollos (pure euro Iberians) are the 2nd largest population after, tri-racials and mullatos are quite numerous in the Caribbean, and the South Americans northern coasts too. However, in matter of identity, Latin Americans are nationalistic, and identify themselves more with the country they live than with abstract races and people from overseas. for most Latin Americans and Latinos the concept of mestizaje (mixed)— the blending of two or more cultures to produce a third — is so fundamental a part of identity as to be "like breathing." extra: info Latino counties: north america: Mexico central america: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, south america: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela caribbean: puerto rico, cuba, dominican republic Urban Dictionary

usually used by persons who have little or no True latin orgins such as mestizos, mulattos, indians, quadrons and blacks living in south american the carribean and united state.probably taken from the spanish word ladino used in the late middel ages To describe someone for mixed races. latin comes from latni a tribe in northern Italy that latter became the Romans who collinized Italy,France,Spain,Portugal,Romania giving them off shoots of the latin language, people in south america who where conqured by people who where conqured latins/latinos does not them they latino Urban Dictionary

The name you give to a person from a Spanish country who is extraordinarily cool! They are smart, free-spirited, contained and never fail to save the day when you most need it; like superman! :D Urban Dictionary

Means "latin". Latino is originated from the people of Italy (Romans used to speak latin, remember?). So any language that originated from Latin (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese) the people that spoke these are the real latins. That means that Latinos are europeans that speak Italian, French, portuguese or Spanish. So when the continent of "America" was conquered by spaniards, they all called their indigeneous slaves "latinos" Urban Dictionary

Word used by any person of Latin-American/ Spanish descent mainly, regardless of their race, to identify themselves as a member of the Latino community. Anyone from a spanish-speaking country (i.e. Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Bolivia, Spain, etc) or who embraces their cultural heritage of one of said countries is a latino. It doesn't matter if they're mestizo, black, white or indian, or if their national culture has more or less elements of either ethnic group. True latinos respect eachother no matter their origins; in fact, in the latino community, to state that you're a latino ( not only that you don't reject your heritage but that you are proud of it), makes you respectable and worthy of being treated like a brother. Being a latino is not about the differences, is about the similarities we share due to historical events and evolution and cultural interexchange throughout the years. Our idiosyncrasy is a fact, and we take pride in it. However certain stupid gringos fail to grasp this, and think that a) it's a term wrongly coined by the US administration to label groups of people with little in common and often with a sense of enmity among them, b) that the word ''latino'' exclusively refers to someone of Italian/ Spanish/ Portuguese/ French/ Romanian descent and is ignorantly being used by people of different races, or c) that being a latino means to ride dirty and dance salsa. Obviously, people who don't understand that this term acquired a whole new meaning ages ago and that it's used to show a feeling of unity, belonging and connection among us. Urban Dictionary
