Otherwise known as a Masked Lapwing, this type of plover is a bird native to Australia. Like most Australian wildlife, this bird has the unstoppable urge to attack humans on sight when you enter or pass nesting grounds, especially during the season of spring (nesting season). Unless you’re in a car, or other covered vehicle, you are the enemy to the plover. You can be minding your own business, walking or riding along, but when you hear the distinctive sound that every Australian has learned to fear, you know that you’ve been spotted as an apparent threat to the nest. It’s too late now to get away. Plovers have spurs on the leading edge of their wings, of which is the weapon of choice when it comes to terrorising humans. At a far distance from the nest, plovers will conduct circling patterns (usually in pairs) above a defenceless human, then at the right time, one or both will swoop down onto the human for the attack. Plover nests are located on the ground, and you’ll know you’re close because the bird will run at you with its spurred wings spread out, in an attempt to deter you away from the nest. Plovers are birds that are feared in Australian society, but if you leave them alone, and just keep going, most of the time they won’t make contact because they find it “too risky”. They’ll still swoop and make a ruckus but in the end, they are just trying to protect their nest, and feel that scary noises and aggressive behaviour is the best way to do that. Urban Dictionary

By doing so, a variety of extremist animal protection and conservation groups have ensured that anytime one of these fang bearing, disease carrying, good for nothing creatures decides to lay nest and make babies on a beach, that beach gets closed down to people for weeks and months on end, regardless of the beaches popularity.
