Scratches

What do we mean by scratches?

A disruption, mark or shallow cut on a surface made by scratching.

An act of scratching the skin to alleviate an itch or irritation.

A starting line (originally and simply, a line scratched in the ground), as in boxing.

A technical error of touching or surpassing the starting mark prior to the official start signal in the sporting events of long jump, discus, hammer throw, shot put, and similar. Originally the starting mark was a scratch on the ground but is now a board or precisely indicated mark.

The last riders to depart in a handicap race.

An aberration.

A horse withdrawn from a race prior to the start.

Money.

A feed, usually a mixture of a few common grains, given to chickens.

In track, when a runner withdraws from a race before it begins. The term originated from the days when heat sheets were written on paper, and a runner's name would litterally be scratched off in pencil when he/she decided not to race. Urban Dictionary

With the same intention as cutting, except trying to avoid scarring. The scratcher will usually use something sharp to the touch but not pure metal, for example, a bobby pin without the plastic coating or a safety pin as opposed to a knife, scissors, razor, pencil sharpener blade, etc. Urban Dictionary
