Definitions and meanings of "Stereotypes"

What do we mean by stereotypes?

A conventional, formulaic, and often oversimplified or exaggerated conception, opinion, or image of (a person).

A person who is regarded as embodying or conforming to a set image or type.

A metal printing plate cast from a matrix moulded from a raised printing surface.

(UML) An extensibility mechanism of the Unified Modeling Language, allowing a new element to be derived from an existing one with added specializations.

A perception of a person or thing that applies those attributes most commonly associated with the group that such person or thing belongs to, regardless of whether that perception is true. This word has gained a negative connotation and is more commonly associated with discrimination, when in reality it is a natural mechanism used by people to better understand the world. This is why when someone says "hockey player" you think of a white guy, or "rapper" and you think of a black guy, or "city" and you think of things like skyscrapers. Urban Dictionary

What everyone does no matter whether they think they do or not Stereotypes, in my opinion, are completely pointless. They're a part of modern society today, and basically it tries to put everyone into one group or another. Many people try to 'be' a certain stereotype just because they think it makes them cool to whoever else. Generally, I believe if people do this, and admit to being whatever stereotype, then they are not that stereotype as they're trying to be something they're not. Many people are discriminated for the way they are stereotyped, and stereotyping has become a sort of discrimination in itself. Just try to be who you are, not what people want you to be or what you think you want to be. Be who you really are. Stereotyping gets rid of individualism and makes everyone similar, which to be honest, is pretty boring Too many people are not given a chance because of whatever way they act, dress, the music they listen to or whatever else. Give them a chance to find what they're really like and you might find you actually like them :) The most common stereotypes for people are emo, indie, chav, goth, prep, scene etc. There is also something called 'ethnic stereotyping' which is like things such as all Asians are really smart, all Jewish people are greedy, all Russian people are called Boris, all British people are either posh or talk live 1800 people =/ etc etc Urban Dictionary

Whether its media or people who categorise and label others to make themselves feel superior. Urban Dictionary

The belief that a certain person has to belong a group that has similar attributes Black/African American/Nigga- thugs, criminals, theives, speaks in ebonics, broke, strapped, rapper, rapist, drug dealers, alcholics Mexican- illegal, janitors, does manual labor for low prices, delivers pizza Chinese/Japanese/Korean- delivers Chinese food, smart in math and science, can't speak English, wannabe rappers White- spoiled, rockers, racist, wannabe black, kiss asses, bossy, punk rocker, pussy ass, afraid of a nigga wigger or wanksta Arab/Iraqi/????Irani???/Indian- wears turbans, owns convenience stores, smelly, angry, terrorist Urban Dictionary

A type of overgeneralization towards any group of peoples or places. (e.g. americans = arrogant) Most stereotypes are used on ethnicities and are usually negative, however many contain a bit of truth in them. The most common stereotypes are (and my rating in accuracy 5=most accurate, 1=least accurate): Black - thugs, gangsters, criminals, rappers, carries alot of jewelry, speaks in ebonics (thug language), armed (e.g. with a gat) Accuracy = 3.5 White - spoiled, arrogant, useless, racists, rockers Accuracy = 2.5 Asian - rich, skinny or chubby, smart in math and sciences, stupid in english and humanities, drives souped up cars (e.g. Honda), skinny eyes, short, wannabes, nerdy Accuracy = 3 Indian - Muslim (therefore terrorists, suicide bombers), smelly, steals stuff, massive accent, keeners Accuracy = 2.5 Jewish (white but somehow differs from other whites) - greedy, cheap, huge noses, backstabbers, rich Accuracy = 3.5 Urban Dictionary

Stereotype(s) means what you expect of some specific people. Like some Americans think British people have messed up teeth and are VERY POSH whereas we British find American stereotypes as fat and lazy (More likely rednecks) gays with there collar up and their shirts unbuttoned Urban Dictionary

Usually the truth about a certain culture, ethnicity, or genre of human life. But we use words like "Stereotypes" to cover up the truth so it can be "Politically Correct" Urban Dictionary

A statement about a group of people, that is true 90% of the time, but when said in front of the other 10% or a Liberal will get you labeled as an ignorant prick. Urban Dictionary

A truthful statement that is painful to hear and difficult to absorb. Urban Dictionary

N. a small kernel of truth that lies at the bottom of a pillowcase full of shit. Urban Dictionary
