His long-standing trio features the sublime Buster Williams on bass and trapset monster Matt Wilson on drums.

His voice as thin as his frame, it was not always possible hear him call his tunes; and sitting a mere three feet from Gravatt's trapset (not our choice despite reserving a few months ahead!), it was not always possible to really hear the piano or bass above a percussive clamour that seemed trapped by the low ceiling.

He supported the great Sarah Vaughan for many years (touring 1954-59), and at one time or another, he has managed the trapset for Eric Dolphy, Stan Getz, Gary Burton,
